Food Waste Facts

(Global Food Losses and Food Waste - FAO, 2011 The environmental crisis: The environment’s role in averting future food crisis – UNEP, 2009)

  • The impact of food waste is not just financial. Environmentally, food waste leads to wasteful use of chemicals such as fertilizers and pesticides; more fuel used for transportation; and more rotting food, creating more methane – one of the most harmful greenhouse gases that contributes to climate change. Methane is 23 times more potent than CO2 as a greenhouse gas
  • Food loss and waste also amount to a major squandering of resources, including water, land, energy, labour and capital and needlessly produce greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to global warming and climate change
  • In developing countries food waste and losses occur mainly at early stages of the food value chain and can be traced back to financial, managerial and technical constraints in harvesting techniques as well as storage –and cooling facilities
  • In medium- and high-income countries food is wasted and lost mainly at later stages in the supply chain. Differing from the situation in developing countries
  • In the United States 30% of all food, worth US$48.3 billion (€32.5 billion), is thrown away each year. It is estimated that about half of the water used to produce this food also goes to waste, since agriculture is the largest human use of water. (Jones, 2004 cited in Lundqvist et al. 2008)
  • United Kingdom households waste an estimated 6.7 million tonnes of food every year, around one third of the 21.7 million tonnes purchased
  • In the USA, organic waste is the second highest component of landfills, which are the largest source of methane emissions
  • This food wastage is due to lack of preservation. If we are able to preserve food under proper environment than the food will be in surplus globally.
Medical care

80 million children die

Medicinal product including vaccine, blood, organs and medicines, etc needs proper preservation at certain temperature during transit. 80 million children in the world die without receiving medical treatment.

Water and Sanitation

3800 children die due to epidemic

Every day, 3800 children in the world die in a epidemic diarrhea caused by contaminated water and unsanitary living environment.

Health & Nutrition

One child dies every five seconds

Every day, every five seconds, one child dies and total of 6.6 million children die every year in the world. A woman dies every 1 minute from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth.

16.6 million orphans

Worldwide, it is estimated that there are 16.6 million children who have lost one or both parents by HIV/AIDS and been orphaned. These HIV/AIDS orphans cannot receive necessary medical care, education, suffers from many difficulties.

Global warming

32.6 billion tons of GHG

Total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the world in 2012 is approximately 32.6 billion tons. Various industries and economical processes result in large quantities of environmentally harmful emissions.

IceBattery system makes it possible to transport products that requires various temperature settings in ordinary trucks eliminating the needs to use refrigerated trucks and dry ice which emit a lot of CO2. It helps to cut CO2 emission by 20-25%.
